Question about lunge technique in fencing?

just started fencing & was wondering:
when doing a lunge, why do you extend the arm FIRST, before moving your front foot forward?
seems to me if you point your foil at someone by extending your arm, doesn’t that tip off to your opponent that you’re about to strike?
